The Wisconsin legislature is divided into two houses: the Senate and the Assembly.
The Senate is comprised of 33 members who are in office for four years and the Assembly is comprised of 99 members who are in office for two years.
Every citizen of Wisconsin has one state Assembly representative and one state senator.
In recent years, the major LGBT -related measure addressed by the Legislature was the proposed constitutional amendment banning marriage and civil unions for gay couples. Before going before voters in November 2006, the amendment had to be approved by a simple majority of both houses of the legislature in two consecutive sessions.
